At Last a Reading Method for Every Child
Our Approach to Reading
Reading at Sandiway Principal Schoolhouse
At Sandiway Chief School we value reading as a fundamental life skill and ensure reading is a fundamental part of what we do. Everything else depends on information technology, so we put as much energy as nosotros possibly can into making sure that every child learns to read every bit quickly every bit possible. All children from the moment they start with the states in Reception are exposed to high quality texts across the curriculum, reading skills are taught explicitly in all year groups and reading is given a loftier profile throughout school.
How we Teach Reading
We follow a Mastery arroyo to English through the programme Pathways to Read. Units of piece of work are delivered using high quality texts and children in all year groups are given varied opportunities for reading. Skills are congenital upwardly through repetition within the units, and children apply these skills in the reading activities provided.
We deliver one whole class shared reading lesson per week from years 2-6 with bespoke grouped reading for every pupil at to the lowest degree in one case a calendar week every bit well as individual reading. In our shared and grouped reads, there is a clear teaching focus with the opportunity to master fundamental reading skills in each session. At that place are follow on reading tasks to enable pupils to show the skills they have mastered independently. For pupils yet needing support with phonics, we provide an private reading programme that has phonically decodable texts at the heart of it.
Many opportunities for widening children'due south vocabulary are given through the Pathways to Read approach and this builds on the all-encompassing piece of work nosotros practise in school to provide our children with a rich and varied vocabulary.
We also use Pathways to Write to drive our writing curriculum. This aligns with Pathways to Read ensuring meaningful links for our pupils with texts and topics that are used across Literacy, Humanities and Scientific discipline.
Reading Books in School
Reading a diversity of books develops skillful habits and independence. In school we provide a range of reading materials. These include high quality story books, newspapers (First News), levelled reading material, library books, data books, eBooks etc. Through reading a range of books children develop preferences and employ the different styles and vocabulary in their own writing.
At Sandiway Primary, nosotros are passionate about reading for pleasure every bit this plays a major office in reading development. Each classroom has an inviting Book Area with high quality texts that take been advisedly chosen. These include the Peak 50 Books for each year grouping (as recommended by Books for Topics). Each form has two Reading Ambassadors who help to choose new texts for their class and monitor the ones they have. Our teachers are readers and share their honey of reading with their children in a range of ways, including daily class reads and making book recommendations.
Recommended Reads by Books for Topics
Early on Reading
Through the didactics of systematic phonics, our aim is for children to become fluent readers past the end of Key Phase One. This fashion, children can focus on developing their fluency and comprehension as they move through the schoolhouse.
The children in Fundamental Stage 1 read a range of high quality scheme books, including Project X, Bug Gild and Big True cat books. These books are advisedly levelled to match the child's phonic skills. Children should be able to read these quite easily, gaining conviction and fluency and aiding comprehension.
